Don’t have an airplane, don’t worry you can still fly over Lake Almanor and around Mt Lassen by taking a scenic flight from Chester’s airport.

Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway
Take a leisurely scenic drive and enjoy the services, attractions, activities and events as you travel the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. This sightseeing ride will take you entirely around Lake Almanor, by Westwood, through Chester, and up to Lassen National Volcanic Park. Discover distinctive scenery as you travel through different elevation levels. Take a fall foliage tour in late October to the end of November for wonderful displays of colors.

Experience volcanic wonders including steam vents, mud pots, boiling pools, volcanic peaks, and painted dunes. Beautiful scenery for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Subway Cave
Take a self guided walk through tube-like caves created thousands years ago by a river of lava that crawled while the top crust cooled and hardened and the lava drained away. A magnificent natural wonder. Don’t forget your flashlight.
Wilderness Trails and Maps
Lassen National Forest Service hosts the largest over snow travel program in California and is currently working on providing additional opportunities for winter and summer off road recreation activities to include motorcycle dirt biking, ATV, mountain biking, walking and hiking trails, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ect.
Lake Almanor Recreational Trail
Experience breath taking views of Lake Almanor, Dyer Mountain and Mount Lassen along this 9.5 mile ten feet wide paved surface walking or biking trail. This trail winds through beautiful forests, meadows, campgrounds, summer home tracts and several lakeshore areas. Great winter trial for cross country skiing or snowshoeing.
Bizz Johnson Trail
This trail follows the old Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific railroad. It winds through the rugged Susan River Canyon, crosses the Susan River 12 times on bridges and trestles and passes through two tunnels. A railroad station type kiosk and a 25 foot carved redwood statue of Paul Bunyan marks the Westwood trail head and travels along the Susan River to the main trail head at the old Railroad Depot in the City of Susanville in Lassen County. The landscape is a combination of semi-arid canyon and forests.

Winter Snow Sports:
As Lake Almanor is located in both Lassen National Forest and Plumas National Forest there are abundant snowmobiling parks, trails and clubs.

Stover Mountain Ski Hill
Skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing hill right outside the town of Chester. Ride one of the longest rope tows in the U.S. to an elevation of 5,600 feet. Stover Mountain Ski Hill is also the site for the annual snowmobile races.
Coppervale Ski Hill
Reasonably priced winter recreational opportunities for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. Groomed slopes in the popular Tahoe style corduroy with poma lift, rope tow, 5 mile cross country ski run, and snowboarding rails.
